So what is this creature?
The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large flippered marine mammal with a discontinuous circumpolar distribution in the Arctic Ocean and sub-Arctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere.
Fun facts about Walrus:
1) A normal human being can hold his/her breath for an average of one minute. A synchronized swimmer can hold his/her breath for about 3 minutes..
But a walrus can stay under water for 30 minutes!
2) Think you eat alot?
A full-grown walrus may eat more than 50 pounds of food a day.
3) An average cat has only 24 whiskers!
But a walrus has as many as 700 whiskers! The whiskers may be up to 12 inches long.
4) A 4 foot walrus penis bone sold at auction in 2007 for $8,000.
5) The tusks of a full grown walrus can weight over 3 pounds each.
6) From a distance the walrus appears to be without fur. However, the entire body is covered with a very thin layer of it.
7) Think you are fat and have too much fats?
The blubber, which is the layers of fat, on a walrus can be more than 5 inches thick!! Almost the length of a subway sandwich ! :O
We also have to consider the fact that global warming is a huge problem for the walrus. They depend on those layers of ice to offer them a place to rest. It is also on the ice where the young are born. This wonderful creature has been clasped by claws of being an extinct animal. It is, sadly, an endangered animal. It is very important to do our bit to prevent this unfortunate thought from transforming into a reality, with Global warming being one of the major threats for the walrus survival. We don't want to see this disporting animal carefully preserved in a museum, do we?
