The Walrus :D

So what is this creature?
The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large flippered marine mammal with a discontinuous circumpolar distribution in the Arctic Ocean and sub-Arctic seas of the Northern Hemisphere.

Fun facts about Walrus:
1) A normal human being can hold his/her breath for an average of one minute. A synchronized swimmer can hold his/her breath for about 3 minutes..
But a walrus can stay under water for 30 minutes!

2) Think you eat alot?
A full-grown walrus may eat more than 50 pounds of food a day.

3) An average cat has only 24 whiskers!
But a walrus has as many as 700 whiskers! The whiskers may be up to 12 inches long.

4)  A 4 foot walrus penis bone sold at auction in 2007 for $8,000.

5) The tusks of a full grown walrus can weight over 3 pounds each.

6) From a distance the walrus appears to be without fur. However, the entire body is covered with a very thin layer of it.

7) Think you are fat and have too much fats?
The blubber, which is the layers of fat, on a walrus can be more than 5 inches thick!! Almost the length of a subway sandwich ! :O

We also have to consider the fact that global warming is a huge problem for the walrus. They depend on those layers of ice to offer them a place to rest. It is also on the ice where the young are born. This wonderful creature has been clasped by claws of being an extinct animal. It is, sadly, an endangered animal. It is very important to do our bit to prevent this unfortunate thought from transforming into a reality, with Global warming being one of the major threats for the walrus survival. We don't want to see this disporting animal carefully preserved in a museum, do we?

Do you know that a baby seal is called a PUP?!

Click on the link below to know more about the harp seals and get to hear how they actually sound!
http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/harp-seal/

Here are some fun facts about the harp seals that i would like to share with all of you. After seeing these, you will know how amazing they are and we should help to protect these amazing animals!

1. Don't try to have a hold your breath competition with them!
BECAUSE they can hold their breath for 16 minutes!!

2. Don't think of winning them in a diving competition!
BECAUSE they can dive to a depth of 280 meters!!

3. Don't compare your speed with them!
BECAUSE they are the fastest swimmers!!

4. Don't compare your endurance with theirs!
BECAUSE when they migrate, they can cover distances of between 6000-8000 km in a year!!

so...STOP killing. SAVE them. Love HARP SEALS!

Polar Bears

Polar Bears
Ursus Maritimus (Sea Bear)

Do you know that polar bear yellows with age?

Facts:
1. Adult males generally weigh between 363 and 771 kg. Able to grow to 3m length.
2. Adult females often weigh between 227 and 272 kg.
3. Ability to swim 161 km at a stretch.
4. Paw pads with rough surfaces help prevent them from slipping up on the ice.
5. They swim using their large front paws to propel themselves through the water and their back legs to steer.
6. Due to the melting of arctic sea ice, they have difficulty swimming to safety and some have drowned..

Under Circumpolar* Protection, court appearance is neccessary if one has to shoot a polar bear in self defense.
*Circumpolar: Located or found in one of the Polar region.

Have you seen this advertisment around billboard of bus stops?

One person's JUNK is another person's TREASURE

As the saying goes One person's junk is another person's treasure. Over the years more and more designers have come up with creative ideas to Recycle unwanted items that have been thrown away by many of us.
Believe it or not! but these beautiful accessories are made out of the inner tube of a bike tire.

who knew that a coke can could be made into a bangle!

?Guess what this dress is made of
it is ...............

 a PHONEBOOK!

So... do you believe that a normal person like me could do something amazing with an old shirt like this...

TADAH!!!!

Here's how i did it.

All you need is a pair of Scissors

Step 1: Mark the area you are cutting
(a chalk or correction fluid will do fine)

Step 2: Cut the area you marked in step 1

* the shirt should be on the ground at all times
to ensure a neat cut

Step 3: Mark the base of the shirt

Step 4: Cut thin strips from the bottom to the line

Step 5: Be PROUD of yourself!

RECYCLING go a long way in helping to prevent the nasty effects of global warming. Global warming not only melts the ice in the Artic, leaving thousands of animals stranded and homeless, it affect us as well! Through the unpredictable weather happening in our very own Singapore and all parts of the world.

The next time when you're clearing out your wardrobe, you might want to consider doing your very own projects or even try out my little project! :)

Came across this advertisement on YouTube which I find very interesting by Nissan USA.
This advertisement is on how Nissan USA is promoting their new product, Nissan LEAF, which is known to be
  • 100% electric
  • Zero gas (No gas required)
  • Zero tailpipe emissions
in an effort to reduce global warming.

In the advertisement, a polar bear sees its Arctic home melting away, and thus sets out on a great journey out of its home to thank someone who is trying to help reduce global warming and save the Arctic. Do check out the video below! (:

& here is the website http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/index#/leaf-electric-car/index if you are interested to know more about Nissan LEAF ! ;)

The hot & burning earth is calling for help!

What Causes Global Warming?

There are a few causes to global warming but today's post will be focusing on the main causes and below are top 7 causes and effects towards global warming.

7 TOP CAUSES & EFFECT!

1) Greenhouse gases
  • Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity production. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2.
2) Humans
  • Driving your car which requires the combustion of tremendous amounts of fossil fuels. These fuels have been storing carbon for thousands, possibly millions of years. When your car burns them, that carbon is instantly release as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
  • Buying your suburban home whose lot was cleared of existing trees and plants that were actively storing carbon. When those plants were killed to build your home, they stopped storing carbon and released all the carbon they had accumulated over tens or even hundreds of years.
  • Eating supermarket meat which requires both the clearing of land for growing animal feed and the use of enormous fossil fuel-powered machines in the production, processing and transportation of this feed (as well as the meat). If you eat beef, lamb or goat meat, those animals’ digestive tracts produce methane, a major greenhouse gas. Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
3) Deforestation
  • The use of forests for fuel (both wood and for charcoal) is one cause of deforestation, but in the first world, our appetite for wood and paper products, our consumption of livestock grazed on former forest land, and the use of tropical forest lands for commodities like palm oil plantations contributes to the mass deforestation of our world. Forests remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and this deforestation releases large amounts of carbon, as well as reducing the amount of carbon capture on the planet.
4) Increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on croplants
  • In the last half of the 20th century, the use of chemical fertilizers  has risen dramatically. The high rate of application of nitrogen-rich fertilizers has effects on the heat storage of cropland (nitrogen oxides have 300 times more heat-trapping capacity per unit of volume than carbon dioxide) and the run-off of excess fertilizers creates 'dead zones' in our oceans. In addition to these effects, high nitrate levels in groundwater due to over-fertilization are cause for concern for human health.
5) Rise in sea levels worldwide
  • One nation, the Maldives and Venice is already looking for a new home, thanks to rising sea levels.

6) Massive crop failures
  • According to recent research, there is a 90% chance that 3 billion people worldwide will have to choose between moving their families to milder climes and going hungry due to climate change within 100 years.
  • “Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production, reduce sanitation, hinder economic development and damage ecosystems. It causes more violent swings between floods and droughts.” – Guardian: Global warming causes 300,000 deaths a year
7) Widespread extinction of species
  • According to research published in Nature, by 2050, rising temperatures could lead to the extinction of more than a million species . And because we can’t exist without a diverse population of species on Earth, this is scary news for humans.
  • “Climate change now represents at least as great a threat to the number of species surviving on Earth as habitat-destruction and modification.” Chris Thomas, conservation biologist at the University of Leeds
Now that you have learned the causes towards global warming, it's time for YOU to take actions now!
"I can make the difference and I will!"

"You can be the change you wish to see. You can turn this dangerous trend into an amazing opportunity."
